Users Coming Off Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing these drugs must be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to original weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle support.
